Historic Home Restoration in Cumbria
Project Overview
When we first visited this Grade II listed Georgian property in the heart of Cumbria, it was suffering from significant damp issues caused by decades of inappropriate modern materials. The owners came to us frustrated after previous attempts to solve the problem had only made matters worse.
The Challenge
The property's original lime plaster had been covered with cement-based renders and modern gypsum plaster, trapping moisture within the walls. This had led to:
- Persistent damp patches on internal walls
- Deteriorating stonework
- Peeling paintwork
- Poor internal air quality
Our Approach
Working closely with local conservation officers, we developed a sensitive restoration plan that prioritised traditional materials and methods. Our process included:
- Careful removal of cement-based renders
- Assessment and repair of the underlying stonework
- Application of traditional horse hair lime plaster throughout
- Installation of appropriate ventilation systems
- Use of breathable lime wash finishes
Traditional Methods, Modern Results
By returning to traditional materials, we achieved:
- Complete elimination of damp issues through natural breathability
- Restoration of the building's natural moisture equilibrium
- Enhanced thermal performance
- Preservation of original architectural features
- A beautiful, authentic finish that honours the property's heritage
The Details
Our team spent particular attention on the ornate cornicing, using specially crafted lime moulds to restore damaged sections. We incorporated horse hair into our lime plaster mix, just as craftsmen would have done centuries ago, ensuring flexibility and strength that will last for generations.
