Heritage Kitchen Transformation in the Lake District
The Vision
Nestled in a traditional Lakeland townhouse, our clients approached us with a challenge: create a space that respected their home's heritage while delivering all the functionality of a modern kitchen. The existing kitchen, while full of character, was suffering from damp issues due to inappropriate modern materials used in previous renovations.

The Process
Our first step was addressing the underlying breathability issues. We stripped back layers of cement-based renders and modern sealants that were trapping moisture in the walls. True to our traditional methods, we reintroduced lime plastering to allow the walls to breathe naturally - a technique that's been proven over centuries in the Lake District's challenging climate.

The renovation included:
- Removal of non-breathable materials
- Traditional lime plastering throughout
- Installation of bespoke Howdens cabinetry
- Heritage-style flooring
- Custom lighting design to enhance original features
- Restoration of original window
- Installation of traditional cast iron radiator
The Result
The finished kitchen stands as a testament to how traditional methods can complement modern living. The lime-plastered walls now regulate moisture naturally, preventing the damp issues that previously plagued the space. Modern appliances sit comfortably alongside restored features, creating a kitchen that's both practical and beautiful.
